The Giammon moon

Samon is the first month of the Celtic year. In the Southern Lands, this is the start of Winter. May's Fire Feast of Beltaine, marked with the rising of Aldebaran and the Pleides at sunrise is met with the onset of the colder seasons in the South. To mark this time, the fire of May in the South is best called for the season of Winter - Teine Geimhreadh Deas - and the lunation of Samon named for the winter, and so the "Giammon moon".

To celebrate this month, season and time, see the poems 'Summer is Gone' and 'Clear Winter'. The seasonal - but not celestial - aspects are associated with Samhain.

The Celtic Year 2007

Cantlos 2006 is the final month of the current Five Year Cycle that began in May 2002, which was also the beginning of the current saeculum or 30 year cycle, with the return of Saturn to the constellation of Taurus as anciently noted by Pliny the Elder. The following lunation, April 24 to May 23 2007, is an intercalary month of 30 days used in the Celtic calendar to keep the solar cycle in check with the lunations, and Samon 2007 begins on May 24 2007. April 24 2007 is the first day of the second Five Year Cycle (2007-2011), the second cycle of the Saeculum 2002-2031.
